Grandma's Melodies

Last Shot

The moment is here. You tighten your grip on the stick, now glowing so brightly thanks to the magic jam from grandma. With all your might, you shout a brave battle cry and toss it towards the big, hairy monster. Despite the glow, the stick cuts through the dark night like a shooting star, and for a brief moment, you feel absolutely powerful.

But the monster is quick, much quicker than its size lets on. It deftly dodges, ducking under the stick with surprising agility. Your heart drops as you see the glowing stick sail past the monster, disappearing into the inky black night. The monster lifts its head, blinking its eyes that the light had moments ago been causing to squint so much. The squint is gone now, replaced by a wide-eyed, curious look. 'No!' you think, rage and fear taking turns racing through you.

Yet what startles you most is, perhaps, seeing the creature flash its teeth in a wide, scary grin. Not a 'people-grin', but a Monster Grin, with too many teeth that makes you shiver. It's not the light bothering him anymore, and he looks right at you with his bushy-browed eyes wide open. A cold laugh echoes from his mouth, chilling you to the bone.

But no, you won’t let the monster win so easily. The chilling laughter might unnerve you, but you shove that fear away. You heard grandma’s lullaby in your head, her soothing voice covering up that horrible sound. That’s right! You aren’t unarmed. You hum grandma's song, timid at first, but soon, it’s loud and sure, and fills you up with new hope and courage. With the comforting melody and your remembered magic, you’re going to fight back, no matter what. The monster might be big but it cannot beat a little person who’s both brave and armed with love.
